Cognitive stylistics has been a new and burgeoning stylistics school overseas since 1990s,which is a combination of linguistics, literary study and cognitive science. It focuses on cognitive structures and cognitive processes of linguistic analysis and linguistic choices, which provides texts and their interpretation with more systematic and elaborate description and interpretation than other subjects such as traditional stylistics or linguistics. Moreover,it brings newer and more comprehensive theoretical and methodological insights to literary translation studies. This thesis takes conceptual metaphor theory, figure and ground theory and image schema theory as its theoretical bases, chooses English versions of established Chinese poetess Li Qingzhao's ci-poetry as its study objects, and adopts descriptive and comparative methods to appreciate and interpret her ci-poems and their related English versions more deeply and comprehensively, demonstrating and illuminating the application and meaning of cognitive mechanisms and cognitive processes to the comparative study of translation,in order to deepen and expand the study of the application of cognitive stylistics to ci-poetry translation. This research is carried out under the theoretical guidance of three important theories of cognitive stylistics, that is,conceptual metaphor theory, figure and ground theory and image schema theory. In the analysis under conceptual metaphor theory,it applies George Lakoff and Mark Johnson's three categorizations of conceptual metaphor, namely structural metaphor, orientational metaphor and ontological metaphor,to study the translation of Li Qingzhao's ci-poems descriptively and comparatively, revealing what the significant role conceptual metaphor has played in the uncovering and demonstration of the poetess's cognition, attitude and feelings as well as the presentation of the artistic conception and themes in her works. As to the part of figure and ground theory,it carries out a comparative cognitive stylistic analysis on the relationship of figure and ground in Li Qingzhao's ci-poems and their English versions from three aspects, that is,the reproduction of artistic conception, the delivery of form and meaning and the transmission of the culture-loaded images, aiming at probing into the success and failure of those English versions in conveying the artistic conception, emotions and themes, and figuring out that figure and ground theory has remarkable influence and effect on translators' translating activities. In the part of image schema theory, container schema, path schema, link schema and up-down schema are applied to tentatively analyze the transmission of images, expression and reproduction of artistic conception of Li Qingzhao's ci-poems and their translations, concluding that image schema theory possesses prominent power in guidance and explanation of translation study. This thesis holds that Li Qingzhao's emotions and attitudes as well as the artistic characteristics, artistic conception and themes, etc.embodied in her ci-poems,all spring from the poetess 's perception of and interaction with her surroundings and the objective world, through her life, body experiences and cognition.Li Qingzhao's ci-poetry embodies her cognitive structures and cognitive processes. The translation is to interpret and explore the cognitive structures and cognitive processes in the texts precisely and thoroughly, representing and reproducing them in translations felicitously. So translators need to combine linguistic interpretation and cognitive analysis, converting and conveying the relationship between language and cognition systematically and skillfully in translations with appropriate methods. The study manifests that cognitive stylistics provides a new methodological guidance and innovative theoretical perspective for ci-poetry study and its translation study, and therefore is enlightening in the practices of ci-poetry translation.
