This translation report is formed based on the translation practice of Chapter Three of the book Playing Smart: New York Women Writers and Modern Magazine Culture.This report is composed of four parts.Part One is the description of translation task introducing mainly the translation text.The text chosen aims to introduce and comment on New York Women Writers Faust and Lasen and their works in magazines,and is of positive significance to help people have a better understanding of the above-mentioned works and contributions of black female writers.Part Two introduces the translation process including mainly the study of the stylistic characteristics of literary critique and relevant research results on black women writers during Harlem Renaissance to gain a full understanding of the source text.Part Three is case analysis.After finishing the draft,the author analyzes vocabulary,syntax and discourse difficulties with specific examples,which involve term,subordinate clause,parenthesis,passive sentence and context.To gain more accurate translation,various translation techniques have been employed,namely conversion of part of speech,word sense disambiguation,addition,split,restructuring and voice conversion.Part Four is a summary.Through this translation practice,the author realizes that the lack of background knowledge of literature leads to poor translation and inefficiency.To be a qualified translator,the author should strive for a good command of two languages and broaden knowledge for future translation.The analysis and self-examination show the gains and thoughts of the author,which aims to provide certain reference for translators doing translation tasks with similar theme.
