Peter Ilitch Tchaikovsky was a great romantic composer in Russia in the 19 th century.Growing up in Russia,he had deep love towards his country and thus created this piano divertimento The Four Seasons.This piano divertimento bears vivid romanticism and takes Russian folk music as its theme,which brings about more innovation to the music.Through contacting with The Four Seasons,the author has obtained a fundamental understanding towards the creation features,historical culture,as well as the form and content of the work.In order to perform it better,the author has listened to many versions of The Four Seasons by different performers and selected three of them,namely,that of Mikhail Pletnev,Vladimir Ashkenazy and Lang Lang respectively,to compare and analyze their similarities and differences in terms of style,speed and strength,hoping to provide some guidance for future performance and meanwhile make piano performance a music creation activity.This thesis will be divided into five parts: Part one is the introduction,which includes the study significance,the study purpose and the literature review.Part two offers a brief introduction towards The Four Seasons by Tchaikovsky and discusses its creation features from its subject and content,style and form,as well as techniques of expression.Part three is the main part of the thesis.At first,the author introduces the three versions by Mikhail Pletnev,Vladimir Ashkenazy and Lang Lang briefly,and find out the similarities between them;then,analyzes their differences in terms of the emotion,speed and strength of performance;at last,analyzes the causes of different performance effects between the three performers.Part four talks about how to better perform the divertimento The Four Seasons from three aspects,say,deep understanding of the work,technically handling with the work and characteristic expression of performers.Part five is the conclusion of the study,hoping that theoretical research on the work can provide some guidance for performing practice and create more possibilities in music handling.With theoretical learning to guide performing practice,performers can improve their comprehensive qualities and thus deliver the thought and emotion of composers better.
