Research On Allegory In Donald Barthelme's The Dead Father

Donald Barthelme is one of the most prominent writer in contemporary American literature,has been hailed as “the father of the post-modern new generation writers ”.His second novel The Dead Father,appraises as “a potential allegory” as soon as it came out.The development of the modem allegory theory has turned the traditional allegory into an art category,Barthelme's writing is under such a background.This article on the basis of theoretical research,combining with the features of post-modernism,aims to excavate the profound allegorical significance in Barthelme's writing,especially in The Dead Father.This thesis consists of the following parts: The introduction part sorts out the current research on Barthelme at home and abroad and the translation of the text of The Dead Father...Then put forward the significance of studying Barthelme in this paper after a whole general overview of it.The first chapter mainly defines the meaning of allegory and allegoric quality,the developing course of traditional allegory,has carried on the diachronic development of allegory.Laid the theoretical basis of this paper by focus on the fragmentation and ambiguous in theory of Benjamin and the theory of post-modern theorist.And made a research to Barthelme's works and discussed the reason why Barthelme choose allegory as his specialty from the aspect of life experience,social background,academic activities.The second chapter discusses the allegoric quality in the embodiment of the subject level with a large number of examples of fully illustrates TheDead Fatherwith ambiguous.For the theme of the text is mainly from the parent and child,the relationship between monarch and minister.Father-son relationship has constantly rebel but regression trend,monarch and minister is always in the midst of a transformation of binary opposition relations,this is both a party violence and also a victim of the party.Paper in the third chapter discusses the specific characterization of allegoric quality in the aspect of the fragmentation characteristics.By learning the aspects of language and the structure of The Dead Father carried on a sufficient analysis of fragmentation.Barthelme through listing catalog tables,borrow and insert,no hint of dialogue form to achieve the purpose of the broken language.Structure is unexpectedly took the books in the way of collage,and for a lot of myth structure fusion parodies.
