English reading is an effective way to learn language knowledge,to know information outside and to improve English practical ability.Meanwhile,English reading ability is a necessary skill received by modern people in study,work and life.Therefore,it is important to cultivate university students' English reading ability in university English teaching.In reality,the whole level of English reading ability for university students is different.Especially for non-English major Mongolian students,they are in trilingual learning environment and Mongolian,Han and English are in different language family.Therefore,English learning is difficult for them.And there exists many obstacles in their English reading.The author tries to find and analyzes these obstacles and reasons causing them.On the basis,provides some effective suggestions in teaching and learning English reading.The author expects to help non-English major Mongolian university students overcome English reading obstacles and improve their reading ability.The fundamental theories of thesis are Schema Theory and Affective Filter Hypothesis.The research subject is 2016 grade non-English major Mongolian students in Inner Mongolia Normal University.The author collects and analyzes data through questionnaire,think-aloud and interview trying to find reading obstacles and reasons causing these obstacles.And also givessome teaching and learning suggestions to help them clear away obstacles and improve reading ability.There are five chapters in the thesis.The first chapter is introduction.Author introduces background,significance,purpose and structure of the research.The second chapter is literature review.Firstly,author introduces the relevant conceptions of research.Secondly,author concludes research achievements about reading obstacles at home and abroad.Thirdly,detailed introduction of Schema Theory and Affective Filter Hypothesis is made by author.The third chapter is research methodology.Author makes an introduction about research questions,subjects,methodologies and processes of data collection completely.The forth chapter is results and discussion.The author divides obstacles into two types: language and non-language obstacles.And analyzes data of questionnaire,think-aloud and interview according to the two types.And then finds reasons causing these reading obstacles.The fifth chapter is conclusion.It mainly concludes two parts.Firstly,it is main findings of the research.Secondly,it is suggestions to teachers and students in overcoming reading obstacles.Main contents of this chapter can be concluded as follows: according to language and non-language obstacles,non-English major Mongolian university students have obstacles in vocabulary,grammar,culture and strategy,reading habits and so on.Reasons can be analyzed from objective and subjective views.In the objective point of view,teachers haven't instructed and advised students systematically in rememberingvocabulary,learning grammar,understanding discourse and using strategies and skills in reading.From the subjective point of view,students have weak basis of vocabulary and grammar and lack of knowledge in discourse and culture.They have bad reading habits and are not good at using reading strategies and skills.They feel anxious when they read.And all of these lead to obstacles in reading.According to analysis of obstacles and reasons in reading,the suggestions for overcoming obstacles and improving reading ability can be concluded from two aspects.Firstly,in real teaching,teachers should teach and instruct students in vocabulary,grammar,discourse,culture and reading strategies and skills systematically based on students' situation.Secondly,students need to follow teachers' teaching arrangement closely and overcome reading obstacles to improve reading ability industriously.English reading ability is a necessary skill that university students should acquire.The author hopes that teachers and non-English major Mongolian university students can learn about obstacles in reading and reasons causing them by the research.And according to suggestions,teachers can instruct students to overcome these obstacles and improve reading ability.
