A Report On Translation Of Chapter Six Of The Rhetoric Of RHETORIC

Wayne.C.Booth, the famous American contemporary rhetorician and literary critics. This paper is a report on the translation practice of The rhetoric of RHETORIC in the sixth chapter of the book.This chapter is the political rhetrickery, that is, Aristotle's "deliberative rhetoric," which mainly points out the importance of "listening rhetoric"in the communication and the disastrous effects caused by rhetorical failure. For Booth, the rigorous, serious and strict political rhetoric is "rhetrickery" which is communicative trick aimed at misunderstanding and cheat, and we must strongly reject it. Booth referred what we have been regarded as rigorous, serious, strict political rhetoric to "rhetrickery"-- to mislead and deceive for the purpose of means of communication, and strongly rejected it. During the translation,the writer found that the "listening" required the audience from the passive "listening" to the active "participating," with dialectical attitude to find common ground and understand the speaker's purpose and intent, seeking the same view and then achieve the purpose of effective communication.The whole process which from the beginning of using rhetoric to making decisions of audience is always dominated by the audience and the unequal rhetoric relationship makes the speaker in the rhetorical process exert all over skill to win the audience support. Some false behavior emerged, speaker's duplicity and inconsistency brought deeper trust crisis and moral crisis. Why American violence is far more than other countries, we have always believed that America's "gun-hold free" is arch-criminal. Booth, however, pointed out that the violent generation and the violent country derived from its society's "verbal violence." The government's blindly deception in words (rhetrickery)leads to the lack of good faith, the society becomes sinister everywhere.Based on the Functional Equivalence Theory, this chapter is analyzed and translated under the "dynamic equivalence" theory in terms of lexical, syntactic and textual equivalence combined with other translation methods.The translation process is also a valuable experience acquisition process:The translation should be not only faithful to the original text but also in line with the target context and meet the target readers, both expressive and vivid.The importance of rhetoric is far from our imagination, so it is urgent to do research in the subject. Rhetoric is bound up with our daily life, so it has theoretical and practical significance to the writer.
