This translation report, based on the examples of passive voice sentences translation extracted from the Manual on the Marine Translation of Dangerous Goods, analyzes the translation of passive voice sentences. It aims to promote the studies on the translation of passive voice sentences. The English passive voice sentence refers to a type of sentences in which the subject receives the action of the verb.Passive voice sentences which barely use the first person pronoun nor second person pronoun are more objective than the active voice sentences. And they are widely used in maritime English. The content of this translation practice report is based upon the translation of Manual on the Marine Translation of Dangerous Goods which involves many passive voice sentences and terminologies. There are many differences between Chinese passive voice sentences and English passive voice sentences in terms of structure and expression. Thus, how to translate the passive voice sentences smoothly and correctly is the main focus and significance of this translation practice report. This translation practice mainly focuses on the Chinese translation of passive voice sentences. This translation practice report, based on Nida's functional equivalence theory, analyzes some representational sentences and comes up with four methods for English to Chinese passive voice translation:translating the English passive voice sentences into(1)Chinese active voice sentences;(2)Chinese passive voice sentences with formal markers;(3)Chinese passive voice sentences without formal markers;(4)Chinese non-subject sentences.By translating maritime pollution related texts and studying the translation methods, this practice report which lays a foundation for further maritime text translation practice is of certain practical significance to both maritime text translation and daily translation practice.
