Dynamic Study On Oxymoron From The Perspective Of Cognitive Linguistics

Language is a tool to think. Oxymoron is a variation of language and violation of the routine language pattern. It begins with the presetting of the context so that receivers of the utterance are able to relate the new and old information and make rational inference. ambivalence is coordinated through Cooperative Principle, Ostensive Inference and Optimal Thinking. The receivers decode it according to the explicature with the help of the context thus get the implicature.Psychological distance is a primary way of aesthetic creation and appreciation. It is not real beauty to be practical and useful, but away from a certain distance, with a detached attitude, beauty comes into existence. But any invisible distance can never bring us beauty. Unworldliness is inseparable with firsthand feeling, and two form a contradiction in distance. The unity of opposites can be found in any contradiction. The psychological distance can be gained by separating the objects and their real life as well as by removing the practical needs and purposes of the subjects. The distance is emotional and fantastic.The stereotypical relationship is a natural relation among things. Everything is related to a certain time, environment. The external form, inner structure, functions are unique. And they will experience the process of budding, developing, and ending. The process is due to some reasons, taking a certain form and showing a certain property. Since it becomes a routine, specific knowledge will be stored in our memory for further use. Conventionally, the relationship between one and the other is stereotypical formed and used.Optimal thinking is a potential law that rational people never fail to obey unconsciously. The relevance relationship is built between the old and new information contextually. The forms, semantics, and pragmatics of oxymoron reveal optimal thinking based on stereotypical relation, whereas, it is a utopian rational choice.Blending space theory, to a certain degree, is temporary in thinking and communication. It is a nonverbal structure during the expression and interpretation. Everyone is involved in the construction of psychological space. It is the distance between the two input spaces that creates the aesthetic psychological distance, and the bridge of the two brings up aesthetic insight into the nature of objects.Through these studies, the author has got two findings. First, oxymoron speakers create the specific rhetoric by presetting the context. Presetting itself is a selective process in which the speakers have to distinguish the implicit and explicit information to ensure that his utterance does not violate the Cooperative Principle despite the violation of certain maxims for the purpose of expression. Second, The beauty of oxymoron can never be revealed without the echo of the receivers. The variation of language and violation of maxims do not mean stereotypical theory and relevance theory are useless to illustrate the internal structure and external meaning of oxymoron.
