Face-racial categorical perception refers to the infants' ability to perceive faces of different individuals in the same race as a category.Previous research has found that the development of infants' face-racial categorical perception is a manifestation of the perception of narrowing and influenced by experience. But its mechanism is still unclear. In the current study,we used the eye-movement technique and the familiarization/novel-preference paradigm to explore the development of face-racial categorical perception in 6-and 9-month–old based on own-and other-race(Asian and African)(Experiment 1)and different other-race faces(African and Caucasian)(Experiment 2).This study mainly addressed the following three questions: 1)What was the development of 6-and 9-month olds' facial categorical perception based on their own-and other-race faces and different other-race faces;2)In the formation of different ethnic facial categorical perception, whether 6-and 9-month-old infants formed a consistent eye-movement scanning pattern in the familiarization and test phases;3)Whether the performance of face-racial categorical perception in 6-and 9-month old was related to their eye-movement scanning patterns. The results showed that:1)Chinese infants of 6-and 9-month-olds were able to form the categorical perception of own-and other-race faces based on own-and other-race faces. But under the conditions of the two other-race faces, only 6-month-olds could form the two other-race categorical perception, while 9-month-olds just perceived the two other-race faces as a class.2)In the process of formation of face-racial categorical perception, there were age and race differences in the consistent scanning patterns across the familiarization and test phases. In the process of perception formation,six-month-old infants formed a consistent scanning pattern on the nose regions of faces during both the familiarization and test phases, whereas the nine-month-old infants formed theconsistent scanning pattern on the facial nose regions only when forming the own-race facial categorical perception.3)In the process of formation of face-racial categorical perception, the infants' performance of categorical perception was related to the differences in the scanning of the two race faces in the test phase, and there were differences in age and race. The performance of the six-month-old infants' categorical perception was related to the difference of scanning in the area of eyes during the test phase no matter based on the own-and other-race or different other races. While 9-month-old infants' categoryperceptual performance was related to the difference of scanning in the area of nose during the test phase when they formed the own-race perception based on the ownand other-race faces. While the correlation returned to the eyes in the process of perceptual formation for other-race when they formed the other-race perception based on the own-and other-race faces. In summary, the development of infants' facial perception of racial categorization was affected by experience. The younger infants formed face-racial categorical perception based on the scanning of facial features. While the older infants formed own-race categorical perception based on the scanning pattern that centers on the nose of the own-race face, and the performance of categorical perception was related to this scanning pattern.
