African-American novelist Toni Morrison's novels always depict the traumatic experiences of the blacks, reflect the psychological pain of them, and seek for a way for them to get rid of trauma.Writing novels over forty years,Morrison shows the world her unlimited creative tension again in the 11th novel God Help the Child, and arouses many scholars' and readers' high interests. In God Help the Child' Toni Morrison returns to the foundation of most of her works:childhood and its traumatic influence. It starts from the theme of childhood trauma, and reveals a variety of problems in contemporary American social life. This thesis adopts trauma theory as its theoretical basis in exploring the roots, symptoms and recovery ways of childhood trauma. The main characters',especially Bride's and Booker's,childhood trauma mainly come from triple aspects:culture, society and family.Colorism, racism, child molestation and family relationships are big social problems which root in today's US society and deserve paying much more attention. It is through narration that the main characters who suffered childhood trauma are able to recover from their traumatic experiences and access to spiritual freedom and peace of mind.Childhood trauma is the accumulation of social problems which reveals ethnic relations, violent culture, inter:personal barriers and other aspects of contemporary social problems that need to be addressed and envisaged.Through this novel,Morrison shows her strong faith in the progress of human society and good wishes for the future life without trauma.
