Philip Roth is one of the most significant writers in contemporary America literature. As a Jewish writer, many of his works concern about issues of the minority. The Human Stain is one of Philip Roth's Trilogies, and the novel was awarded the National Jewish Book Award and Faulkner Award for Fiction in 2001.The novel describes identity crisis that the black people encountered in the white centered American society. On the one hand, the blacks were born with black culture;on the other hand, they are unconsciously influenced by the white culture. This thesis deplores the causes of the black's identity crisis based on Bhabha's theories, which will be a reference for the people who have the same identity issues.Based on post-colonial theory, this thesis focuses on the blacks' identity crisis. The first chapter provides a brief introduction to Philip Roth, his novel The Human Stain and Homi Bhabha's theories. The second chapter focuses on the blacks' suffering from keeping their own culture and the difficulties in integrating into white-dominated American society.Based on the former two chapters, the third chapter applies Bhabha's theories to explore the causes of the blacks' identity crisis. The last chapter is the conclusion of the thesis. With the integration and innovation of the global culture, the identity issue of the minority becomes a matter of urgent concern. The exploration of the causes of their identity crisis will be practical for them to walk out of the dilemma.
