Marie NDiaye is one of the most important female writers in France.Rosie Carpe, which is published in 2001,won the Femina Prize. In this novel, the sign of touch is essential for the literal world. And it is connected with the theme of alienation. The dissertation analyzes the novel through the thematic criticism relying particularly on the theory of "touching" proposed by Jacques Derrida.Touch is the basic sense of contact. All the physical senses can be considered as representations of the sense of touch.According to Derrida, the notion of touch and its presentations form altogether a philosophical topology. Not only does it cover the multiple senses of contact, but also focuses on relations between human beings:the"touching yourself" indicates relations with oneself; The "touching one another"points out relations with others; The "touching the world" and the non-touching.In the imaginary world of the novel, our analyses concentrate on the manifestations of the "touching" to discover the symbolic sense hidden beneath the textual surface. It indicates that everything is contingent on how and in what way one determines the body and the interpersonal relations. If emotional ties are created by the touch,it also generates distances between the both sides of the relationship. The sign of touch clearly manifests the characteristics of ambivalence. The subject touches himself/herself in order to establish his/her identity, touches the circle of family to approach to the personal origin and touches the outside world to confirm the sense of existence in the world.Yet he/she becomes estranged from himself/herself by the touch. And furthermore, uncertainty, alterity, rupture and heterogeneity are inherent qualities of the "touching" The theme of alienation is thus incarnated through the "touching".And NDiaye's writing shows also some alienation effects.By reconstructing the topology around the sign of touch, this study of the novel Rosie Carpe allows us to analyze NDiaye's thoughts on the existence of human beings in the realistic and contemporary world. It also leads us to enter the imaginary world of the author and to discover the inspiration of her literary creation.
