Metaphor, from a rhetoric device in the past to a way of viewing the world and the material, constantly integrating with other areas to a new direction. And the hottest area recently is the cognitive linguistics perspective.Among the researches conducting into the metaphor translation and cognitive linguistics,The C-E translating of The Book of Poetry has been blossoming during recent years. The Book of Poetry is known as the first anthologies of poetry in China and precious treasure of world literature. The C-E translating of The Book of Poetry is served as a bridge for cross-cultural communication between eastern and western countries.Recently, the translation of The Book of Poetry has become more and more diversified. However, related researches in the area of metaphor translation mainly aim to analyze translating methods and types of metaphors. There are few researches to pay attention to inner mappings and cognitive structures during metaphor translations. In the English translation of many excellent scholars at home and abroad, the translations of Xu Yuanchong and James Legge are relativelyeasy,time-oriented,and have different influences on the followers in their countries. This paper will study how translators understand metaphors in classic Chinese poetry through mapping processes,in order to find out what metaphors they used in their mapping processes under the guidance of cognitive translation theory. To be specific, the research questions are as follows: 1)What are the conceptual metaphors used in two translators' mapping processes? 2)What are similarities and differences on source domains in mapping processes? The research pays attention to the cognitive foundation of metaphor for the two translators Xu Yuanchong and James Legge, two excellent translators among China and foreign countries.By qualitative and quantitative methods, the paper have selected four examples among their translation versions to describe the questions. With analyzing their mapping process in figures, the author divided examples into animal metaphor and plant metaphor to show their different source domains. As the conclusion, based on four mapping processes of two translators, there is no similarity among their source domains in mapping processes,so as their metaphors used in poems. That are differences on what they are thinking when facing the objects and how they regard this object.Translators use different words to build metaphors through different mapping processes to express their emotions and feelings about this world.
