Regarding the theory of harmonious beauty as the theoretical support,the thesis attempts to explore the harmonious beauty of internality and externality and that of material and emotion in Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility,and tries to have a further understanding of the harmonious relation of sense and sensibility in the novel.In the first chapter,the thesis gives a brief introduction of Jane Austen and Sense and Sensibility.As a British female writer living in the late 18th and early 19th century,Jane Austen plays a decisive role in the history of British literature.In her masterpiece Sense and Sensibility,through portraying two Dashwood sisters,Jane Austen relates to the readers the story of love and marriage.In the second chapter,the thesis introduces the domestic and foreign situations of researches on Jane Austen and her works,and provides the author's viewpoint.In the third chapter,the thesis elaborates on the theory of harmonious beauty.Based on the theory of harmonious beauty,the thesis deeply analyzes Sense and Sensibility in the fourth chapter.Firstly,the thesis discusses the harmonious beauty of internality and externality in the novel,showing Jane Austen's glorious concept of "the individual's living in harmony with the nature".Taking the historical background and the realities into consideration,Jane Austen also works hard to express her views on the harmonious beauty of material and emotion.Then,in the fifth chapter,the thesis further explores the harmonious relation of sense and sensibility in the aspects of individual personalities,emotional modes and differential obstacles.In the sixth chapter,the thesis draws the conclusion that Jane Austen's ideas of harmonious beauty are full represented in Sense and Sensibility,and also points out some limitations.At last,the thesis talks about the implications brought by the discussion of the theory of harmonious beauty in Sense and Sensibility.
