Research on language attitude arose in the 60s of the last century.It has been widely studied by the scholars abroad and at home which covers a standard language and its certain dialect variation,standard language and ethnic languages,and multiple languages with quantitative and qualitative methods.The thesis adopts quantitative and qualitative methods that are questionnaire and Matched Guise Technique to study language attitudes of teachers in Xinyingzi Town No.3 Primary School in Togtoh County,Huhhot,towards Togtoh dialect and Mandarin.In the previous investigations,the subjects of many researches on language attitudes are focused on students,or migrant workers,or young people,but not any teachers.The thesis attempts to explore the relationship between Togtoh dialect and Mandarin focusing on the following three questions:1.What are the subjects' language attitudes towards Mandarin and Togtoh dialect?2.How are the subjects' general language usages?3.Will their language attitudes be different concerning their gender,age,place of birth,and their educational background?If there are differences,and what are they?It has an essential theoretical significance on theory of language planning and language policy.The thesis has four variables related to gender,age,educational background,and birthplaces and ten dimensions from two aspects of social status and solidarity to study the subjects' attitudes.It gets the conclusion that:Firstly,because of the different language level,female and male subjects have different language attitudes towards Togtoh dialect and Mandarin.Secondly,the elder subjects hold positive attitudes towards Togtoh dialect but not towards Mandarin,while the young ones are contrary to them.Thirdly,subjects' educational background and birthplace have influences on their language attitudes to some extent but they do not play an important role.Fourthly,Togtoh dialect gets the higher solidarity except on the item of cordial and charming,and Mandarin enjoys the higher social status.Fifthly,Togtoh dialect is used more in daily life and Mandarin is used in more formal situation.The present study illustrates the relationship among language ability,language use,language choice and language attitudes that these four items are correlated with each other and influenced each other.
