A Cognitive Study On The Realization Of Linguistic Economy In Du Fu's Poems

As a unique literary form in Chinese,ancient poetry has its own special pattern of rhyme and set of rules.Du Fu,whose poems are famous for polishing words and sentences,and refining meanings,is one of the most outstanding poets in Tang Dynasty.Du's poems are concise in word and rich in meaning.The implicit meanings in poems are the results of economy principle and restriction of poetic structures.Many scholars pay attention to Du's poems.However,previous studies pay more attention to the image,writing style and poetic technique of Du's poems,a few researchers study Du Fu from the perspective of linguistic economy.Therefore,this thesis has attempted to make a research of linguistic economy in Chinese ancient poems by making a case study of Du Fu based on Formal Unit Concept Frame Theory and Conceptual Metonymy Theory.This thesis has collected corpus from Dushi Xiangzhu(????)written by Qiu Zhaoao(???),Du Fu Shi Xuanzhu(?????)written by Xiao Difei(???)and other theses.Based on a careful collection,sorting,observation,analyzing and summarizing,this thesis summarized three kinds of linguistic economy in Du Fu's poems,namely ellipsis,word conversion and rhetoric device.According to this classification,this thesis has analyzed the realization of linguistic economy in Du's poems.Based on the elements that are represented in the poems,the concept frames being activated are listed and analyzed.Poet's compositional intentions,common knowledge structure,context and profiling are taken into account.Finally,pragmatic effects of linguistic economy in Du's poems are addressed.This thesis shows that the linguistic economy in Du Fu's poems involves ellipsis,word conversion and rhetoric device.The distributions of different classifications in Du's poems are variant and each of them has its own features.According to the elements being represented in the poems,different thing or event concept frames can be activated.However,one or several elements in the thing or event concept frames on the first,second or third levels are omitted or used to represent other elements.Generally speaking,the features of words being represented in poems are profiled.The profiling methods are metonymy or the combination of conceptual metonymy and conceptual metaphor.The pragmatic effects of linguistic economy in Du's poems can be summarized as follows.Firstly,linguistic economy achieves the phonetic,vocabulary,syntax,and discourse beauties of poems.Secondly,conversational implicatures are produced.Then,linguistic economy in Du's poems can change the information structure of the poem and profile the focus of information.Besides,via recreation and natural integration,readers combine static and dynamic of poems together.
