A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Beijing's Success In Bidding Winter Olympics In China And U.S. Broadsheets

Critical Discourse Analysis(CDA)is socially committed scientific paradigm,whose principle aim is to uncover ideologies and power relationships hidden in language.It provides the theoretical constructions for the study of news discourse,which is helpful for researchers and readers to explore ideological factors behind the news discourse representations.The present research aims to find out linguistic strategies applied in constructing �Beijing's success in bidding 2022 Winter Olympics� in China and U.S.broadsheets and ideological factors behind the discursive representations.Data is collected from the official websites of Chinese mainstream newspapers,China Daily and People's Daily Online,and the official websites of American mainstream newspapers,New York Times and The Washington Post.The detailed analysis is conducted under Fairclough's three-dimensional framework.In the dimension of text,to analyze the linguistic features at the textual level is the main concern,and data is analyzed from the perspectives of lexical classification and transitivity.In the dimension of discursive practice,the present research does manifest intertextuality analysis from the perspective of discourse representation in terms of mode of discourse representation,reporting verb,and news source.In the dimension of social practice,social determinants and hidden ideologies are discussed.The research results illustrate that �Beijing's success in bidding 2022 Winter Olympics�receives strikingly different representations in China and U.S.broadsheets for different national contexts and ideologies.Chinese broadsheets have a praising attitude toward the awarding issue and China while American broadsheets hold a complex attitude.Though acknowledging China's efforts and achievements to a degree,American broadsheets tend more to highlight China's disadvantages as the host country and represent China as a human-rights violator,polluter,and economically inefficient country,and even to politicize the Olympics-related news reports and attack China's political system.
