A Study On Translator's Subjectivity In English Version Of Shengsi Pilao From Hermeneutic Motion's Perspective

Serving as the bridge between the author and the target language(TL)readers,the translator plays a crucial role in the whole translating process.Previously,translation studies have been upholding the criterion for the translating success: mostly,faithfulness to the original text.The translator's subjective initiative and his or her influence on the translated version have long been under-prized or even been ignored,thus failing to retain the due value.“Cultural turn”,emerging in the west in early 1970 s,enables the translator's cultural identity and subjectivity to be visible to the translating circle.George Steiner,a prestige British theorist,proposes his Hermeneutic Motion Theory(HMT),a fourfold mode describing the literary translation process.The theory has broken the restraints put on the translator's subjectivity by traditional translating conception,and has affirmed the active initiative of the translator throughout the translation process.The English version of Mo Yan's Shengsi pilao is selected to be the material for research.Under the guidance of HMT,the subjectivity of Howard Goldblatt manifested throughout the translating process is to be discussed in the thesis consisting of five chapters.Chapter One briefly introduces significance,background and methodology of the research,together with some other information;Chapter Two,besides relating the typicality of the material — the novel,and recent studies on Goldblatt's translation of Mo's works,focuses on sorting and analyzing the research findings on translator's subjectivity,both at home and abroad,in different stages,to further ascertain the cut-in point of the study;Chapter Three,serving as a theoretical framework,clarifies the subjectivity of the translator and its characteristics,states the origin and core concepts of HMT,and explores the feasibility of combining HMT with literary translation;Chapter Four elaborates on how HMT cooperates tightly with the practical translating process by adaption and extension of its fourfold moves—“trust”,“aggression”,“incorporation”,and “compensation”,to illustrate the influence of translator's subjectivity on selection of the source text(ST),proper comprehension of ST,formation of the translated version under the manipulation of certain translating strategy and methods,thus achieving the win-win result of intercultural dissemination between the target and source cultures;Chapter Five concludes the research findings of the thesis,and the limitation of HMT is mentioned toavoid the risk of misunderstanding and over-interpretation.The thesis intends to provide useful and instructive references for the further studies and for the promotion of Chinese literature's translation and transmission.
