| Jackson Pollock, the major figure of Western abstract expressionism in the 1950 s.Wei Xu,a well-known Chinese calligrapher in the late Ming Dynasty. They both have significant influence in the history of Chinese art as well as Western art.At present, many papers, books, and videos have praised their artistic life and historical achievements respectively. However, little research is about their aesthetic styles, especially, the connection between their aesthetic styles. This paper, using comparative analysis method, exhaustively analyzed the connection between Pollock and Wei Xu in internal and external form, and then tried to inspire the creation of contemporary calligraphy according to characteristics of the similarity and the difference in aesthetic styles. This paper has four chapters. The first chapter respectively described the way that Pollock and Wei Xu formed their final aesthetic styles. The form of “expression” embodied in their works was not born with. However,it was formed under on the influence from an artistic environment,on the base of learning experiences from predecessors, and incorporating their own situation. From the second chapter, the paper discusses the connection of their aesthetic styles. Two major components of art perform: the internal form, and the external form. The internal form is mainly subjective based. Both Pollick’s and Wei Xu’s growth was rough.Turbulence and frustration created their eccentric character, and the interference from external factors made them try to rebel all kinds of unfairness. This also directly affected the cultural basis of their art form.Frist of all, regarding the philosophical theory, they both are more inclined to the viewpoint of Zen because the principle of Zen is to break the yoke of darkness and encourage freedom.Second, from a perspective of art, they both advocated that the expression of art should follow the heart, and appeal personal characteristic. The internal aesthetic style determined the physical appearance.Hence, the “significant form” becomes their common method for external expression. In addition, since lines and space are the two elements of the external form, this chapter integrates specific artwork of two artists, elaborated the sense of three-dimension,rhythm,emotion in lines,as well as a sense of layers and spaciousness in space. Therefore, the third chapter mainly focuses on the contrastbetween their aesthetic styles.Although Pollock and Wei Xu possess some similarities in their aesthetic styles, there are differences as they lived under different cultural background and times, and engaged in different art categories. This chapter aims to explain that the nature of them is distinct in spite that they both belong to abstract art.The abstractness of calligraphy was mainly reflected in its method, but it still has to follow the essence of the rule-text-based,at the same time, calligraphy also has the function of culture inheritance.Nevertheless, for Western abstractism, not only the form of expression is abstract but also the content, which is not limited by the form. They all had born for the form. For the comparison with Western abstract art in the performance of space, calligraphy has an additional time characteristics. The fourth chapter summarized the influence of Western abstractism on contemporary Chinese calligraphy. The discussion of similarities and differences between Pollock and Wei Xu in their aesthetic styles serves to show some inspiration that contemporary calligraphy art could acquire from the intense encounter between Chinese and Western art, modern and classic art,as well as how we can learn from past and Western culture, opening up a new path for contemporary calligraphy. All in all, this article expect young artists to realize, through this article, there is no borders and no fixed rules in art.All categories of art and their forms of expression exist reasonably. We should neither criticize ignorantly, nor reject blindly, nor accept without any principles.Instead,we should critically think about relationship between acceptance and rejection. This is helpful for both the inheritance of classic and the creativity of development, and hence promoting the development of calligraphy art. |
