The study of this study is based on the Re levance theory of Sperber and W ilson.Relevance theory holds that language is a os tensive-inferential cognitive process that includes explicit reasoning and assumptions.Every communicative behavior should be envisaged to reach the optim al relevance.In communicative behavior,the original author,the translator and the reader form a dual ostensive-inferentia process.First,the translator needs to deduce the intention original author,and then through the understanding of the reader's cognitive context,the translator can establish a suitable context to guide reade rs to achieve m aximum relevance.The tran slator has the responsibility to infer the inte ntion of the readers and m ake them clear to the readers from other culture groups.Cultural-loaded words are the hard nut for both the translation theorist in China and abroad,Eat,Pray,Love:One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy,India and Indonesia,which is the New York Times best-seller in recent years,contains may cultural elements due to the specialty of the novel.The novel describes the experience of the writers in three countries and m any exotic cultural words appear.This study attempts to further the analysis in translation and cultural defau lt on the basis of the relevance theory.By analyzing the transl ated version,we want to find out the strategies used to achieve optimal equivalence between the writers and readers.In the first two chapters,the thesis m akes an overview of relevance theory and cultural default,and discusses the relationship between relevance theory and cultural default.In translation comments,this article analyze the translation from the m yths,customs,allusions,special cultural phenom enon regarding cultural default.In the process of solving the cultural default,the translator has established the re levance between the writer and the reader and the readers by effective translation strategies.
