| Children’s literature is an important field of study.Targeted at children,it depicts a world of children, using language characteristic of children. As Chinese children’s literature is "going global" rapidly,it is being translated and promoted more and has made global impact. As for the research of children’s literature and its translation, researchers focus much on how the linguistic features of children’s literature are represented in target languages.Since the 1990s,corpus-based approaches have become a paradigm in the research of language and translation. This thesis adopts this paradigm and conducts a study of linguistic features of Chinese children’s literature and its translation into English.A parallel corpus of Chinese children’s literature into English was built.Corpus-based contrastive studies were firstly conducted between Chinese children’s and non-children’s literature to reveal the linguistic features of Chinese children’s literature.Similar studies were then conducted to show those in its translation.Similarities and differences between two types of translation were analyzed from the perspective of translation strategies, source language influence and translation universals.Chinese children’s literature is characteristic of children-oriented language,as is shown in lexical and sentential features, that is,simplified usage of language and overall tendency to convey concreteness and to describle a world of innocence. These features are also shown in its English translations.English translation of Chinese children’s literature can be characterized as one that is original-language-oriented,which means that the simplification in the language use and concreteness and innocence in the text are also represented in the target language.English translation in its process is found to be simplified, too. The translation strategies can be generalized as simplification under the influence of source language. |
