Marianne Moore(1887-1972)is regarded as one of well-known American modernist poets in the 20th century. She constantly innovates her poetic style based on American literature tradition she inherited. With her wild imagination and keen observation, she successfully extends the dimension of language.Critical studies of Marianne Moore primarily situate Moore in the broad contexts of gender, poetic technique, comparative literature and ecology. This thesis mainly analyzes the poetry of poet Marianne Moore from the perspective of postmodernism. This thesis is constituted by five sections. The introductory section mainly gives a brief summary of life and works of Marianne Moore, reviews the domestic and foreign researches of Marianne Moore and her poetry, expounds American scholar Ihab Hassan's theory of postmodernism as well as presents the structure of this thesis.Chapter one demonstrates the formation of Moore's postmodern consciousness from aspects of Moore's decentering attitude toward poetic creation and her pluralistic identity. In chapter two,I will explore the indeterminacy in Moore's poetry in relation to the themes and images.Chapter three analyzes the immanence of Moore's poetry through language. The immanence of Moore's poetry includes disassembly and reassembly, conversational style and discontinuous space-time structure. In final section,it concludes that the postmodern features of Moore's poetry are not only in line with Ihab Hassan's theory of postmodernism but also linked with Moore 's decentering attitude toward poetic creation and Moore's pluralistic identity, which reveals Moore's inner desire to subvert traditional mode of poetic creation and to pursue pluralistic creation for the sake of breaking through female writing limitations and achieving the aim of being a poet with independent spirits.
