As a famous liberalistic intelligentsia in the 1930s and 1940s,Xu Xu created a series of medium-length novels with his unique personality temperament and spirit,and created a group of distinctive intellectual image.Xu Xu's philosophical reflections on life,love and spirit are merged into the intellectuals in his novels,it opens up a fresh outlook and thought-provoking.This paper tries to analyze spiritual journey and spiritual dilemma of intellectuals,which from their characteristics of personality,mental status and the life pursuit.From them,we can explore Xu Xu's own spiritual growth,so the thesis has a certain value and significance for studying.The first chapter analyzes the two types of intellectuals in Xu Xu's novels.They are self-exile of the "marginal people",the characteristics of marginalization mainly in two aspects.First,they abandon the "to take the world as own duty" of the holy Aura which is fully valued by the traditional intellectuals.They take a skeptical,negative and critical attitude toward mainstream values and social politics,and even eschew reality.Snapping the umbilical cord with social ties,they just want to be a "free man".On the other hand,they are irrational individualists.They disregard all traditional moral and social rules,pursuit individual independence and absolute freedom,distort individualism into absolute self-doctrine.Although the performances are different,the result has also caused the original desire of life and natural character to indulge,resulting in their own and others hurt.The second chapter mainly explains the life form and the subconscious mind of these"marginalized" intellectuals.Their attitudes towards political ideals and social reality are negative and rebellious,and they are obsessed with the pursuit of absolute freedom and individual desire.So their spirit is difficult to adhere to the mainstream values of society,it is also difficult to integrate into the ordinary
