This is a project report on the translation of the excerpts from the Report of the Iraq Inquiry, which mainly elaborates the investigation into Britain joining in the Iraq War launched by the independent five-people Committee of Privy Counsellors commissioned by the then Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Gordon Brown MP.This translation project aims to shed light on the whole event to Chinese readers from a new point of view whilst promoting further understanding of the complicated international politics.Meanwhile, the author expects to improve translation skills as well as enhance the level of translation through this project. In view of its text type, the key and difficult points in translation lie in the fact that the source text covers many specific organizational titles as well as news terminologies in terms of vocabulary and involves numerous long sentences and passive voices when it comes to sentence structures, which not only requires tremendous relevant background knowledge for the translation but also serves as a challenge to the grammatical knowledge and logical thinking of the author. In addition, the report,as a typical informative text, performs the main function of conveying information and possesses such characteristics as seriousness and accuracy. In light of the features of the source text, therefore,Katharina Reiss’s theory of text typology provides theoretical guidance for the translation of the project. The author strives to achieve semantic equivalence between the source text and the translation as well as to secure the high quality of translation by combining relevant background knowledge and employing such translation strategies as division, amplification and conversion.Through this translation project, the author has gained new insight into translation and obtained the enlightenments as follows:thorough preparation serves as the premise and basis for the high quality of translation. The translator should not only pay attention to the text type of the source text and adopt appropriate translation strategies in accordance with various text types, but also have a great understanding of the background knowledge.During the translation, the author should take full advantage of the chosen theoretical guidance and be adept in utilizing various translation strategies as well as such tools as dictionaries and the internet so as to obtain faithful and smooth translation. After the translation is completed, the translator should proofread and polish it for a better quality of translation. The author realized that appropriate theoretical guidance, thorough and meticulous preparation, and remarkable abilities in bilingual languages, together with sheer tenacity and perseverance in the face of difficulties are all indispensable to translation.
