Study On Reception Of Cleanth Brooks And Robert Penn Warren's Understanding Poetry In China

American critics Collins Brooks and Robert Penn Warren's poetry criticism embodied in their “Understanding Poetry”.This book includes both interpretation of poetic theory and criticism of poetry text.However,there is no Chinese version of this book.Also,Brooks and Warren's poetry criticism become one-sided misconception at home.So this paper will take the reception of “Understanding Poetry”for object,discussing problems in the cognition,dissemination and application process from theory,methods and practice angles.Analyzing reasons of these problems and proposing solutions will make for the comprehensive reception of “Understanding Poetry”and correct the misunderstanding of Brooks and Warren's poetry criticism at home,and then provide a new direction and more possibilities for the research of New Criticism.The introduction part arranges current research status at home,finds that Understanding Poetry has not been paid enough attention at home.And there is still misunderstanding of Brooks and Warren's poetic views.Therefore,finding insufficient based on existing research results and asking questions,will help the development of pertinence research.The first chapter analyzes research status of “Understanding Poetry”.First,explaining their poetic views in “Understanding Poetry”,including their divide to poetry elements from angles of meaning,skill and reading.Second,pointing out the deficiencies of domestic scholars,such as taking a part for the whole and binary opposition,summarizing specific performance and connection of the deficiencies.Third,thinking about the reasons for the deficiencies,finding the pluralism nature of Brooks and Warren's poetic views,seeking the significance of this nature to correct deficiencies of domestic scholars.The second chapter investigates the dissemination of “Understanding Poetry”.First,arranging the dissemination status of their poetry criticism in the book by communication of scholars,translation of works,and college textbooks.Second,inducing the limitations of their poetry criticism,including emphasizing theory and despisingpractice,the lack of methods,and incomplete translation,discussing the strategies to reply these limitations.Third,reflecting reasons of variation of Brooks and Warren's poetry criticism in the dissemination process,pointing out the significance of returning to New Criticism and redefining “internal research”.The third chapter investigates the application of “Understanding Poetry”.First,introducing the application of Brooks and Warren's theories and methods in poetry and fiction criticism by domestic critics.Second,analyzing the misunderstanding of some critics based on specific practice,including losing quintessence,intermixed use of terms,idea first.Third,inducing steps of“close reading”from analysis of “The Canonization”by Brooks and Warren in the book,discussing Wang Yi's criticism case of “Zhang Chang,Your Nanny”and get inspiration from it.The conclusion part summarizes this paper.We draw a conclusion that the study of Brooks and Warren's poetry criticism should not stop on the achievement of our predecessors,it should continue to move forward based on returning to “Understanding Poetry”and New Criticism.The domestic scholars provides more possibilities to research “Understanding Poetry”,Brooks and Warren from the sinicization of New Criticism.The marginalization and sinicization of New Criticism are the reciprocal causation for each other.Only enriching the meaning of sinicization of New Criticism,then could we improve its situation of marginalization,so the comprehensive reception of “Understanding Poetry”is the precondition of related research.
