This practice report, based on the author's translation of The Bidding Document of Namphak Hydropower Project, mainly discusses three problems, namely the translation of long simple sentences, the translation of long complex sentences and the translation of long coordinate sentences. As a result of the huge differences between two languages of English and Chinese in expression, there are various methods for translating different kinds of long sentences.Long simple sentences, with relatively simple sentence structures, contain lots of information;long complex sentences, with complicated sentence structures, possess many "multi-branch structures" and logical relations;long coordinate sentences contain attributive clauses, implied meaning and conjunctions.Based on the existing translation strategies and the sufficient study of the characteristics of every kind of long sentences, the author finds out the methods for translating different kinds of long sentences. The author uses the methods of hysteron-proteron and“following the original syntactic order”to translate long simple sentences, uses the methods of splitting, repetition, and comprehensive methods to translate long complex sentences, and uses the methods of embedding, amplification and omission to translate long coordinate sentences.Except "following the original syntactic order",all the other methods in this report focus on flexibility.Furthermore, functional equivalence theory also emphasizes flexibility, stressing that when translating, the translator should change the original form to convey the semantic meaning of original text. This practice report is on flexibility in Chinese translation of long sentences based on functional equivalence theory. The author hopes that other translators who will translate bidding documents in the future can draw lessons from my practice report.
