A Study Of Chinese-English Interpreting Strategies For Cultural Vacancy From The Perspective Of Cultural Schema Theory

This thesis explores the Chinese-English interpreting strategies for cultural vacancy from the perspective of Cultural Schema Theory.Due to cultural differences between different nations,some concepts in Chinese have no corresponding expressions in English sometimes,which is called cultural vacancy.Most of the previous studies focused on cultural vacancy in translation,and few studies have been found that approach the issue in interpretations.Cultural Schema Theory,a relatively new schema theory,holds that cultural schema is a kind of knowledge structure based on the particular cultural experiences.Cultural vacancy is caused by three different corresponding relations of cultural schema:the partial overlap of cultural schema,the conflict of cultural schema and the deficiency of cultural schema.Therefore,this thesis takes the approach of Cultural Schema Theory to discuss the Chinese-English interpreting strategies for cultural vacancy from the above three aspects.This thesis is a qualitative study with case analysis,and the data are collected from the interpreting texts of premiers'speeches from the premier's press conferences during 2004-2016.It is concluded that:(1)under the partial overlap of cultural schema,the strategy of borrowing can be adopted.(2)under the conflict of cultural schema,the strategies of literal interpretation,compensation or explanation can be used.(3)under the deficiency of cultural schema,the strategies of literal interpretation or explanation can be used.This thesis,from the perspective of Cultural Schema Theory,discusses the Chinese-English interpreting strategies for cultural vacancy,which promotes the study of the interpreting strategies for cultural vacancy on one hand,and extends the application of Cultural Schema Theory on the other hand.
