| According to the bisection method,Chinese idioms can be divided into joint type idioms and non-joint type idioms.The paper focuses on four-character joint type idioms which are symmetrical and coordinate in form.This kind of joint type idiom is also called two-two succeed structure.The construction meaning of joint type idioms is not the simple addition of two parts’ meanings.The construction meaning of joint type idioms is independent from composition meaning of inner words.The study on English translation of Chinese joint type idioms is in favor of spreading Chinese traditional culture as well as culture exchanging between Chinese and English.Construction grammar represent language by constructions.Construction coercion has explanatory power for incompatibility and mismatch between construction meaning and lexical meaning.This study presents results of modern studies of construction grammar and relative theories of cognitive grammar at abroad and home.Based on the refined construction coercion of Wang Yin,the study intends to explore its explanatory power in English translation of Chinese joint type idioms in The Boat to Redemption.The study also analyzes various representations of English translation of Chinese joint type idioms in The Boat to Redemption based on construction coercion.And then the study summarizes several representation patterns of English translation of joint type idioms based on different coercion effects.The study is willing to give some enlightenment to the English translation of Chinese joint type idioms in Chinese novels.According to semantic relations,this study analyzes three kinds of typical Chinese joint type idioms of synonymous relation,antonymous relation and correlative relation corpus-based on the Su Tong’s novel The Boat to Redemption and its English version translated by Howard Goldblatt.The study shows construction coercion can give a full account of structure stability and meaning integrity of Chinese joint type idioms.Construction coercion also has explanatory power for the diversities of their English representations.Under the guidance of the general construction coercion,the English translation accesses to construction meaning and gives up all form and literal meaning of Chinese joint type idioms.Chinese "M1+M2" construction is presented as English "C" construction based on construction coercion.Under the guidance of lexical coercion,the English translation of Chinese joint type idioms stresses lexical meaning and keeps the form of Chinese joint type idioms.Chinese "M1+M2" construction is presented as English "M(+M)" construction based on lexical coercion.Under the guidance of inertia coercion,the English translation of Chinese joint type idioms mainly remains the construction meaning and overlooks the literal meaning as well as the coordinate form.Chinese "M1+M2",construction is mainly presented as English "C" construction and sometimes as English "M(+M)" construction.The study advocates several English translation principles of Chinese joint type idioms:to pursue construction meaning correspondence,to salient the meaning of key words and to omit empty words.Construction coercion has explanatory power for formal conflicts and semantic diversities of English translation of Chinese joint type idioms.There are various representations of the English translation of Chinese joint type idioms in Chinese novel based on construction coercion.The representations of English translation of joint type idioms follow distinct patterns under different coercion effects.The representation patterns of English translation of Chinese joint type idioms in the novel is irrelevant to the inner-semantic relations of joint type idioms. |
