With the continuous deepening of globalization,growing numbers of English websites were gradually set up by universities and colleges to expand their external publicity.University web is a main approach for publication and becomes an essential part for a university.And the quality of its translation will be an indirect influence on the effect of academic exchanges.This translation report covers the web informative texts of School of Marine Science & Technology,Tianjin University(hereafter referred as Marine School),including the School and faculty team introduction as well as some notifications.In terms of the text features,the translation texts are mainly informative texts.Most of them are news texts which are characterized by accuracy,conciseness,and feature of timeliness.There are two features of school web news translation in this translated practice: the abundant specialized vocabularies and academic expressions with Chinese unique features which are hard to find a correspondent word in English.The translation practice report is under the guidance of the three basic progression patterns from the Thematic Progression Theory of Systemic-functional Grammar,a branch of Functional Linguistics,namely Constant Theme Pattern,Constant Rheme Pattern and Crossing Progression Pattern,and analyzes the feasibility of such theory applied in translation practices through some of the cases in the source text.Due to the inadequate lexical connection approaches and insufficient cohesive ties in the discourses of the translation text,the semantic associations and logical relations between sentences lack of overt connection.Therefore,in order to achieve an accurate,complete and smooth translated version,the thematic progression modes of the original version should be kept or reconstructed by combing logical relations,properly using technique of amplification and adjusting sentence structure.The translation practice report contains four chapters.The first chapter is the brief introduction of the translation task to illustrate the features and background of the translation program and particularly note the requirements of the consignor to the translator.The second chapter is the description of the translation process.The third chapter is the analysis of the specific translation cases to illustrate how the Thematic Progression Theory guides the translation practice,especially the concrete guidance to the concrete translation problems.The fourth chapter is the summary of the translation practice that mainly summarizes the guidance of the Theory to the translation version and makes a simplified reflection on the translation practice.The translation practice report tries to settle the questions and difficulties in the translation process through Thematic Progression Theory to find out efficient strategies and skills of the school informative texts translation.Thus,the quality of this translation practice will be improved.It deepens not only the knowledge of the translator to the school informative texts translation,but also provides the relevant experience and references to the further translation practices of this kind.
