Attitude Analysis Of 2015 Pulitzer-winning Public Service Reporting From The Perspective Of Appraisal Theory

News report is a m ain research object in linguistic studies.For a long tim e,linguists have done researches about it from various perspectives.In revealing the attitudes of news reports,Appraisal Theory,proposed by Martin and other scholars,is deemed as a inf luential theory.This theory consists of three subsystems,namely,attitude,engagement and graduation.Pulitzer Prize is the highest journalistic award in America,in which Pulitz er Public Service prize is one of the most important prizes.But Pulitzer Public Service winning works haven' t aroused enough atte ntion from Chinese linguists.2015 Pulitzer-winning Public Service reporting describes the domestic violence situation in South Carolina,USA.This resea rch employs subsystem of Appraisal Theory--attitude,uses UAM Corpus Tool to mark and count attitude resources in the selected reporting.By empl oying qualitative as well as quantitative m ethods,this research studies the d istribution and features of attitudinal resources in Pulitze r Prize-winning public service re porting to provide a way to find out the attitude and stance of a news reporting.The selected 2015 Pulitzer Public Servi ce winning reporting consists of five chapters with around 22000 words.The study shows in this reporting the three subsystems of attitude resources are all used to help the reporting express its stance.On the whole,the num ber of negative attitude resources in the selected reporting is far more than that of the positive ones,which illustrates this r eporting tend to uncover and criticize.T he most frequently used attitude resource in the selected reporting is affect resource,unlike the trad itional news r eport,a larg e number of attitude resources can directly let readers know the feelings involved in the reporting.In affect resources,unhappiness resource is used the most,which can arou se people's attention of dom estic violence.In judgment resources,propriety resource appears the most and th e number of negative propriety outruns the positive ones,which reflects dom estic abusers' behavior is against m orality or the law.In appreciation system,the total occu rrence of reaction is th e highest and negative reaction is more than positiv e one,which indicates do mestic violence is not welcomed.Though in the reporting negative attitude resources are dom inant,in dis/inclination resources and valuation resources,the number of positive resources is more than that of negative ones,which expresses people's wish and the possibility to solve domestic violence problems.Besides,in this reporting non-au thorial affect is far more than authorial affect,im plicit judgment takes a higher proportion than explicit judgment and implicit appreciation is em ployed more than explicit appreciation.This displays the selected Pulitzer Public Service winning reporting is objective.The present research of 2015 Pulitzer-winning Public Service rep orting from the appraisal perspective can contribute to the comprehension of Appraisal Theory and widen the application scope of the theory.Besides,the present study of attitude resources in the selected reporting can help us im prove our ability to interpret and evaluate news reporting and get us to know how to find out the attitudes and stances of a news reporting.
