According to the College English Curriculum Requirements,non-English majors should be good at using words in writing and speaking in a tactful way.However,in present college English classes,teachers pay more attention to teaching related vocabularies and the Chinese meanings,instead of the related meanings among each entry.As for students,they may feel boring in the process of remembering vocabularies,and this can lead to a low efficiency.One important aspect of College English Test Band 4 and Band 6 is examining students' understanding of metaphorical language.Presently,there are many metaphorical vocabularies,sentences and discourses in the college English textbooks.Thus,in the teaching practice,teachers should help students better know the importance of metaphor,thereby promoting students' better understanding of the relationship between different senses of metaphorical vocabularies and enhancing the metaphor awareness and their learning effects.By starting from the vocabulary acquisition,vocabulary learning,and vocabulary learning strategy,this study introduced the conceptual metaphor into vocabulary teaching and tries to explore the relationship between cultivating metaphor awareness and vocabulary learning effects.A 17-week contrasted experiment was carried out based on two classes(one major in law,the other major in international trade and economics)in one university.They were assigned as the experimental and control group.Both classes have 60 students,and they are provided with same teaching materials.The major difference is that an adjusted teaching method,which incorporates the knowledge of metaphor,was adopted to teach the experimental group.Based on the result of three tests-a pretest,a posttest,and a test a week after the first two tests,the EXCEL,SPSS and MATLAB were used to conduct the independent sample t-test,paired-sample T test and cross analysis.Results showed that the cultivating metaphor awareness has a positive effect on vocabulary learning and can help students better understand and master the polysemy of metaphorical language.These results can provide a reference for cultivating students' metaphor awareness in the future,and therefore be beneficial to their vocabulary learning.
