Between the late 19 th century and the early 20 th century,the capitalist countries such as the U.K and the U.S came to a new era.With the rapid process of industrialization and urbanization,the modern city developed quickly,at the expense of the independent peasants,the gap between rich and poor was growing,which gave a great shock to the poor.Many writers captured the shock occurred to people's spirits with great poignancy,and used them in their works.“Maggie: A Girl of the Streets”,“Tess of the d'Urbervilles” and “Sister Carrie ”were born in this era.Tough they were wrote by different writers,but they all show fallen women's lives in the social transition period.The protagonists,Maggie,Tess and Carrie have many similarities.They were born underclass,thy lived in the very bottom of the society,they all desired for pure love and good life,but they finally stood in the opposite of the social morality.This paper focuses on contrasting and analyzing the female characters' fall: Chapter One analyzes the authors and their novels,examines how the writers' life experiences and social background contributes to the characters.And then,Chapter two analyzes the encounter of the protagonists,discussing how they fall and why the fall.In Chapter three,by combining characters' spiritual awakening and their own choices in life,comes to a conclusion that their fall is actually a limited way to fight against the world under great pressure of patriarchy.The protagonists didn't want to give up to life,but chose to go against the social morality and religion,just to achieve their goals or resist to oppression.Although they had to pay a lot,they were attractive characters no matter they succeeded or not.Compared to be regarded as fallen women,they were more likely to be fighters who pursued self-development.
