Toni Morrison is the only African-American female writer who has won the Nobel Prize for Literature.Maternal love is a consistent theme of the novels in the Toni Morrison's works.In 2008,Toni Morrison's latest novel,A Mercy shaped the nobility and greatness of maternal love once more.A Mercy narrates a mother's effort of protecting children from the slavery by extreme behavior caused by misapprehension,grudged,distortion of maternal love,and different colors under the institution of slavery,and different ethnic women's tragic fates in the early North American Colony are revealed.Women's suffering from physical and psychological affliction,self-loss,depressive emotion and spirit of slavery are also depicted.This thesis is composed of three parts.Part One elaborates introduction from related background,theories,literature review and the structure of the paper.Part Two consists of three chapters which discuss the diversities of maternal love.Chapter One displays the genuineness of maternal love from both biological and non-biological tie.Chapter Two analyzes the misapprehension towards mother,daughter and lover.Chapter Three presents the distorted maternal love between whites,whites and blacks,and the colored.Part Three concluded by emphasizing the diversities of maternal love.By accomplishing their self-realization and rebuilding,women will obtain a guide for the achievement of their life goals.It also encourages women from different racial and cultural backgrounds to stand against and recover from the destruction to their body and mind to realize self-identity.Through the combination of diversities of maternal love and Toni Morrison's A Mercy,this great female writer and her works could be appreciated on a higher level.
