A Research On The MANNER Of Motion Event In Modern Chinese

In recent years,research on motion events has been an increasing interest.According to Talmy's(2000b),MANNER is an external semantic component of the motion event,which is a component of the Co-event.Research on MANNER of the motion event can add more details to the research on the whole Motion Event,making it more comprehensive.The paper is divided into five parts.The first chapter is a general introduction to the study object,the state of this research,methods of research,corpus source and the literature review.Chapter two is the definition of MANNER and the analysis of the internal semantics of it.We define MANNER as the behavior or state of a certain action behavior taken by FIGURE that implements the spatial motion.MANNER and CAUSE are differences in the presence or absence of external cause factors.The internal semantics of MANNER has differnent types and there is a hierarchical relationship between the semantic types.Chapter three gives an explicit description to the expression of MANNER in motion event.In this paper,the coding of MANNER is divided into two kinds of declarative and modified according to the function.The syntactic and semantic features of each coding structure are summarized and described.Also,multiple coding components can co-encode MANNER in Chinese expression of motion events.We combed different coding structures and summarized the characteristics of MANNER codings.Chapter four gives an empirical research on the pragmatic tendency of MANNER in Chinese.According to the experimental data,we discussed the pragmatic tendency of MANNER in the expression of motion event in Chinese and the typological characteristics which are manifested.The last chapter is a summary to the whole paper,including the conclusion,the innovation points and the limitations as well.There are hierarchical relations between different internal semantics of MANNER.Chinese native speakers tend to choose an "non-integrative" way of the conceptualization.Chinese has the characteristics of "weak satellite-framed language" which means it conforms to some important features of satellite-framed language but is not typical in the pragmatic tendency.
