Shostakovich was a famous composer and social activist during the Soviet period.He advanced the traditional composing techniques in a unique way and applied the classical composing techniques skillfully.He was a master of applying chromaticism and new harmonic techniques into his composition.In addition,he not only used these techniques in his symphonic creation,but also used similar skills in piano prelude works.This paper is mainly focused on Shostakovich's piano preludes.Deepen the understanding of harmonic language and mode,following by the study of harmonic techniques used in his works.Through detailed analysis of his music composition techniques,this paper also summarizes the characteristics of his music composition style,and lays the foundation for the study of Shostakovich's harmonic techniques.This paper is divided into four parts: the first part mainly introduces Shostakovich's life and his piano works.Additionally,the characteristics of his works in different periods have also been briefly discussed.The second part discusses about the research on the mode application of Shostakovich's piano prelude.I have concluded three forms of mode application through the analysis of characteristics in terms of mode in the piano preludes and comprehensive use of.The third part is a detailed study of the harmonic language in Shostakovich's piano prelude,which is devoted to the study of the harmony and chord structure.In the fourth part,based on the previous research,this paper analyzes the characteristics of harmonic skills in Shostakovich's piano prelude and its influence on the later composers' creation.Last,the author sums up all the analyzed points in this paper.
