The ST of this translation project report is the second chapter of Beyond the University: Why Liberal Education Matters whose author is Michael S.Roth.Focused on pragmatism,this chapter broadly introduces education experiences and ideas of educators such as Booker T.Washington,Du Bois,Jane Adams and William James.For each of them,the author gives a very objective and fair evaluation.Through the reading of this section,readers can briefly learn about the higher education of the United States.The translation item will benefit the development of China’s higher education by manifesting the merits of that of the USA,and also enrich the translator’s practical experience.The translation report is portioned into five parts.Chapter one introduces the background and highlights and value of the item.Chapter Two centers on the author and the main content of the book.Chapter Three depicts the guiding theory in translation practice and the analysis of the source text.Chapter Four elaborates translation difficulties and the matching translation methods.The last chapter outlines the whole translation assignment,and exhibits the translator’s perception to translation and problems unresolved.
