| English campus news,a sub-category of news,published on the university website and targeted at students and universities of target language countries,reports the latest development and research results,events and polices.It is based on the platform of the university’s propaganda to present the advantageous resources and the latest development.By presenting its unique advantages and reporting its research results,the communication has been established between the university and the prospective students or potential partners.As a result,English campus news plays a vital role in establishing positive images of the university,and contributes to marketing the university.Therefore,the study on interpersonal meaning of English campus news is of great significance.Interpersonal meaning derives from Halliday’s interpersonal function.It focuses on how people express attitude through language and try to influence others’ attitudes and behaviors.Halliday holds that the interpersonal meaning is mainly realized by mood,modality and key.However,Halliday’s interpersonal studies are more inclined to interaction rather than feelings.Therefore,Martin establishes the lexically-based framework from the semantic perspectives,namely,appraisal theory.Under the appraisal theory,interpersonal meaning is mainly realized by evaluation.Halliday’s SFG and Martin’s appraisal theory are two main theories to analyze interpersonal meaning of texts.Images,an effective means to convey information,also express certain interpersonal meaning.VG proposed by Kress & van Leeuwen provides a theoretical foundation to explore the interpersonal meaning of images.Therefore,this paper integrates appraisal theory with VG to explore the interpersonal meaning of texts and images of English campus news from the perspective of PDA.35 pieces of English campus news analyzed in this paper are randomly selected from Tsinghua University websites.They are analyzed from the perspective of PDA under appraisal theory and VG.The author,combining the quantitative method with qualitative method,firstly analyzes the interpersonal meaning of texts in Englishcampus news,then explores the interpersonal meaning of images.The author aims at answering the following two questions: First,how is the interpersonal meaning realized in English campus news? Second,what kind of interpersonal meaning does English campus news express from the perspective of PDA?Through analysis,the results show the following two points:First,with respect to the construction of interpersonal meaning in text,positive appraisal resources are far more than negative ones.As for the appraisal system,attitude is of the highest percentage.Engagement ranks the second and graduation is the least used.Within the attitude system,appreciation plays the dominant role.Affect is the least used and judgment is in the middle between appreciation and affect.In the engagement system,attribute and entertain are used most frequently,while disclaim and proclaim seldom occur.Graduation is mainly realized by force.The number of up-scaling is more than the number of down-scaling.With respect to the construction of interactive meaning in images,offer is more frequently employed than demand.For social distance,medium shot has the largest number.In the system of attitude,frontal angle is most used at the horizontal angle and eye level is most frequently adopted at the vertical level.Besides,images often adopt high modality.Second,the results show that English campus news of Tsinghua University has established a good interaction with the readers.Meanwhile,by publishing English campus news which reflects well-equipped,both in faculties and facilities,the latest researches and rich cooperations,the English campus news of Tsinghua University reflects positive interpersonal meaning.Besides,it is revealed that images convey the same interpersonal meaning as texts in English campus news.Images are able to vividly present the information on the one hand.On the other hand,images can interact with viewers and make solidarity with readers.Finally,through the interpersonal analysis of English campus news,hopefully,this paper will contribute to the writing of English campus news of all universities and will offer some guidances to the study of interpersonal meaning of the combination of texts and images.Also,the author hopes that this paper will provide some valuable references to the analysis of interpersonal meaning of Chinese campus news. |
