D.H.Lawrence is a very important writer in the history of the 20th century British and world literature. His works, with strong sense of autobiography, are greatly influenced by his time and his own experience. He projects the marks of his life into his works, expressing his own ideals with literary creation. He criticizes the rationality and emptiness of industrial civilization, and advocates the natural instinct of human beings. But his straightforward, bold writing style has been controversial, and his works cannot get the understanding of his contemporaries.Until now,the evaluation of Lawrence's work is as much censured as praised. From wide view of the study of the works of Lawrence at home and abroad, the evaluation and interpretation of short stories still lack certain breadth and depth.Lawrence's short stories are mostly studied from the perspective of symbolism, feminism, post colonialism, and psychoanalysis. From the perspective of ethical literary criticism, there are few systematic studies of his short stories. On the basis of close reading of texts, this thesis uses the method of ethical literary criticism to carry out detailed study of Lawrence's short stories to reveal his ethical ideal from the aspects of man and nature, man and others, and man and society. In the ethical relationship between man and nature,Lawrence criticizes the opposition and destruction of nature by modern industry, and he thinks human should respect nature, and comply with nature. In the ethical relationship between man and others,he tries to retrieve the natural character of mankind through irrational blood power. In the ethical relationship between man and society,Lawrence reveals the oppression and distortion of humanity in the materialistic society, advocating reducing material desires and returning to nature.
