With the rapid development of video game and localization industry,game localization has become a big market.An increasing number of netizens and game players in China trigger a high demand for game localization translation service.Localization translation is an important stage of localization procedures,and it is also a new field of translation.The success of game localization greatly depends on its localization translation quality.Therefore,it is important to do research on translation methods of game subtitles.Moreover,this research can help localization translators to make a quick classification of collectible card game texts and provide suggestions and references for choice of effective translation methods.The research questions to be addressed in this thesis are as follows:-What are the text types of collectible card game texts?-What translation methods are used in each text type?-What is the relatively most appropriate translation method in collectible card game localization translation?This research is quantitative and qualitative,mainly focusing on translation methods used in different text types of collectible card game subtitles,from the perspective of text typology of Reiss and Newmark.It creates a corpus whose data are extracted from the English version and the simplified Chinese version of Hearthstone: One Night in Karazhan,and then analyzes the data and obtains the result on the most suitable translation method in different text types of collectible card games.There are five chapters in this thesis.Chapter One is the introduction,including the research background and significance,research questions,research method and structure of the thesis.Chapter Two is the literature review,including the history and development of game localization translation,and the research achievements on text typology.Chapter Three is the research design,including the object of study,instruments,data collection and data analysis.Chapter Four is the results and discussion,including the text types in CCG texts,translation methods used in each text type,and effective translation methods in localization translation of CCG texts.Chapter Five is the conclusion,including the major findings,limitations,and suggestions for future research.The research findings indicate that there are three text types in CCG texts,namely informative text,expressive text and operative text.Different game text types have different functions,which determines the corresponding translation methods.In localization of CCG texts,ten translation methods are used,including word-for-word translation,literal translation,faithful translation,semantic translation,adaptation,free translation,idiomatic translation,communicative translation,transliteration,and recreation.In informative texts,literal translation takes up 80.9 % and it is the most frequently used translation method.In expressive texts,semantic translation accounts for 34.9 % and it is the most commonly used translation,followed by recreation which accounts for 16.6%.In operative texts,literal translation takes up 70.3 % and it is the most frequently used translation method.As a result,in localizing CCG texts,literal translation is the most appropriate translation method in informative texts;semantic translation is the most suitable translation method in expressive texts,followed by recreation;literal translation is the most appropriate translation method in operative texts.
