Chuan Dongbei gas Project(CDB Project),a joint venture by Chevron and China National Petroleum Corporation(CNPC),has one independent electricity division.Chevron Corporation is an American multinational energy corporation,one of the founders of standard oil.CNPC is an integrated international energy company.The author served as an interpreter in the electricity division of CDB project from July 2015 to February 2017.Seizing the opportunity,the interpreter finished hundreds of site interpreting and meeting interpreting tasks and successfully gathered a large number of examples.The report involves four parts.Firstly,the interpreter introduces interpreting task and background.Secondly,preparations are summarized—electricity glossary,Indian,Scottish and American Accents,electricity work procedure and safety knowledge.Thirdly,problems and countermeasures in the interpreting process are discussed.Problems of meeting interpreting involve long time interpreting pressure,lack of electricity expertise,and coordinate words;the countermeasures are analysis of the source language(SL),paraphrase,and summarization.Problems of site interpreting involve too many abbreviations and conflicts;the countermeasures are requesting explanation and amplification.Most important of all,syntactic linearity principle is particularly applied to long time interpreting.According to the principle of syntactic linearity,the interpreter in the process of interpreting divides the SL into several sense groups,and naturally combines them in the target language(TL).The principle of syntactic linearity can be described as: dividing,cutting,estimating,adjusting,shifting,adding,and deleting.Through the analysis of many examples,the interpreter presents and proves the advantages and practicability of the syntactic linearity principle.In case studies,the interpreter utilizes numerous cases—overhead line,terminal pole,switchgear,UPS,fuse,capacitor etc.The last section includes self-evaluation,customers’ feedback,and suggestions for the future study.This report is worthy of a reference for electricity interpreting,and its case analysis provides electricity interpreters with solutions to similar problems.Due to the lack of meeting interpreting experience and systematic electricity expertise,the interpreter needs to improve in the relay(one part of switchgear)interpreting.To be a more professional electricity interpreter in the future,the interpreter is supposed to continue to learn electricity expertise in the aspect of relay and improve its correspondent interpreting skills.In addition,the interpreter is expected to further improve the basic skills of interpreting through more practice..
