Under the guidance of schema theory, this paper studies the listening comprehension of African students in China, selecting topic familiarity and vocabulary as two influencing factors, and designs the listening comprehension experiment to verify the influence of the two independent variables on the listening comprehension of the students. This paper also explores these two independent variables' interaction effects on the listening comprehension of the primary level of African students. The author first explains the reasons and research significance of the topic, the relevant research status in China and foreign countries, the research content and methods,as well as the research innovation. The second chapter explains the relationship between vocabulary and unknown vocabulary rate in this experimental study. And we count the unknown words rate in the passages of Chinese Listening Course and the Development of Chinese Primary Hearing, which are used by the research subjects.Combining with the requirements in Chinese proficiency level standards and grammar level outline,we finally determine the control of the unknown words rate of 2% and 8%.From the third chapter, this paper carries out experimental research, using the combination of four research methods: experimental design, unknown words test and questionnaire to make sure the effect of topic familiarity and unknown words rate on students' listening comprehension.Three research hypotheses are presented in this chapter. There are 63 experimental subjects who are from Shandong Normal University and Jinan University. The unknown words test are about all words in the listening passages except "you","I","he","you" and "we".When the words' error rates are more than 85%,we can identify them as unknown words. The results show that the degree of familiarity is particularly significant, the effect of unknown words rate is weaker than topic familiarity, but it also shows significant influence. However, the interaction between these two factors is not significant.According to the conclusion of the study, the fifth chapter of this paper puts forward some opinions and suggestions on listening teaching and textbook writing.Firstly, teachers should increase the part of the explanation and guidance appropriately, making full use of background knowledge in the students' listening comprehension to improve the efficiency of listening teaching. In addition, primary listening textbooks are supposed to include daily life topics and other unfamiliar topics, which means that unfamiliar topics should occupy a considerable proportion. Moreover, the arrangement of unknown words rate can vary from topic to topic. In the passages of familiar topics, the unknown words rate can be higher. In the passages of unfamiliar topics, the unknown words rate had better be lower. Finally, the author puts forward the shortcomings of this experiment, and gives some advice about further study.
