Great attention has been paid to the style reproduction in the translation of literature works by scholars.A qualified translation should not only properly express the meaning in the original text, but also represent the style of the original text. However, there is still no certain definition of style in the academic field. In my opinion, style is inseparable from a writer's thoughts, ideas and intentions of writing, and is determined by a work's distinguished features. Each work has its own distinctive style;hence, the study of style reproduction in literature works should combine with specific works. This thesis conducts a study of the translation of Tess of the d' Urbervilles in terms of its style reproduction. The thesis is based on the comparison between Zhang Guruo's and Sun Fali's versions, adopting the method of textual analysis and comparison. It answers the question of style reproduction in the translation of Tess of the d' Urbervilles from three aspects which are symbolism,Wessex dialect, and the novel's narrative methods. The above three aspects are the indispensable factors that determine the style of Tess of the d'Urbervilles. The application of natural images and death scenes in the novel develops the personalities of the characters in the novel, and also reflects Hardy's fatalism.Hence, the translation should represent the implications of symbolism in the novel, recreating the writing style of the original text.Apart from symbolism,Tess of the d'Urbervilles is famous for its Wessex dialect.Translating Wessex dialect into Chinese is one of the most difficult parts of translating this novel, not to mention retaining its local flavour. The novel's narrative techniques should also be paid attention to in its Chinese versions. The original text intends to reflect the devastating effects of industrialization on agricultural society and on peasants. This thesis emphasizes the importance of style reproduction in the translation of literature works.Through the analysis of abundant cases, the thesis believes that Zhang's version is better than Sun's in terms of style reproduction, and Zhang's translation techniques are various and flexible.
