Italian literature is not only an important branch of world literature but also one of the major parts of European literature. There is a number of Nobel Prize winners,outstanding writers with great literature works emerged in the Modern times.However, the achievement of study on Modern Italian literature is rare based on the current study status in China. The little attention on Italian literature field led to the lack of favorable translations. Therefore, many domestic readers, even those who have interest, cannot understand such great works appropriately owning to lack of good Chinese Version. This paper aims to introduce an Italian writer Federico Tozzi and his works for a better understanding of Italian literature.Federigo Tozzi (1883-] 920) is a narrative novelist in the early twentieth century.He was born in Siena, a small city of Tuscany, Italy. In his thirty-seven years of living, a great number of excellent novels and poems were created, and the well-known is his novel trilogy: "With Closed Eyes" (Con Gli Occhi Chiusi)published in 1919, "Three Crosses" (Tre Croci) published in 1920, and "The Farm"(Il Podere) published in 1921. His essays "The Beast" (Bestie) is one of top achievements among process at that time. Federigo Tozzi was a writer, journalist and politician. He co-founded the Catholic journal "La Torre" (La Torre) with a college which slogan was to be "The Union of Italian Spirit (Organo Della Reazione Spirituale Italiana)". From above, it is clear that Tozzi's works were focused on reflecting people's spiritual world back then. In March 1920, Tozzi got the notorious Spanish Flu led to serious pneumonia complications, and died in Rome the same month. His body was sent back to Siena cemetery. Unfortunately, Tozzi's works had not gotten the attention of Italian literary community until years after his death. The value of Tozzi's literary works was discovered and has been constantly excavated,and Tozzi was commended as one of the most valued Italian novelists in the twentieth century. Tozzi's literary works truly reflected the social situation of Italy from the end of the nineteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth century. At the same time, he presented his psychological cognition through the description of the character's psychological activities in the book,and has given a vivid image of Italians folks' daily life and spiritual world in an increasingly decay capitalist society.This paper starts with the background of Modern times that Tozzi grow up in,and elaborates Tozzi's life experience and the era to help readers to have a preliminary understanding of this novelist. Then it lead to the introduction of domestic and foreign study of Federigo Tozzi's novels. Secondly, it focus on studying the main characters of his trilogy "With Closed Eyes" (Con Gli Occhi Chiust), "Three Crosses" (Tre Croci), and "The Farm" (Il Podere) to analyze the common spiritual feature of that generation of Italian intelligentsia--- Incompetence,by analyzing characters' psychology. The next chapter is to explore what artistic approaches Tozzi used as an expressionist writer to show us the spiritual connotation in the book, and let us readers comprehend the spiritual world of Italian intelligentsia through his own intuition. At the last part, to indicate the reason Tozzi build such spiritual world is the major subject and shall be analyzed based on issues of Tozzi's life experience, family background, social environment and more.
