With the development of science and technology, people's use of media has changed greatly in the process of communication. Verbal mode is no longer the absolutely dominant object for the research, scholars conduct communication studies on many other kinds of modes such as gestures, facial expressions, sounds, images, and so on. Such comprehensive usage of different feelings and different modes is called multimodal discourse. The television series discourse is a typical type of dynamic multimodal discourse since it includes language, the auditory mode and the visual mode.It is clear that the discourse markers by speakers directly influence hearers'understanding of speakers' utterances and cognition of discourse markers. Meanwhile, discourse markers as a kind of verbal mode also benefit to constructing the discourse integrity together with other modes.Having selecting the three seasons of House of Cards as the research discourse, this study is to study the verbal pragmatic functions of the 5 top discourse markers in the TV series and chooses discourse marker so as a typical one to illustrate its interaction with other modes, such as intonations and facial expressions used by the speakers in House of Cards based on the corpus built from the perspective of multimodal discourse analysis. For the construction of the corpus. 39 videos of House of Cards are chosen as the corpus resource, then the subtitle is transcribed. By transcribing the captions, 5-discourse-marker-concordances are extracted so as to analyze their pragmatic functions, and by clipping the relative audios and images, multimodalcorpora are built so as to explore the interaction between the verbal pragmatic functions and their intonations, between the verbal pragmatic functions and their facial expressions with so as a discourse marker.Based on the data analysis, the author found that in the dynamic discourse, the discourse marker varies in pragmatic functions while differently intonating. It is such difference that contributes to the discourse coherence and integrity. On the other hand, speakers' facial expressions associated with so characterize differently on the various occasions or due to the different social relations. So it is significant to take this attempt to carry out the interactive analysis of auditory modes and visual modes in the multimodal discourse, representing the synergy of modalities in television series discourse. And this study also hopes to provide some implications for English learners from the perspective of pragmatic functions in terms of the interactions between discourse marker so and its intonations. And such research is supposed to extend the dimension of discourse analysis.
