Since the reform and opening up,China has undergone tremendous changes in politics, economy, culture, technology, diplomacy and other aspects. For this reason, large quantities of new things, new concepts and new ideas are emerging constantly. For the development of language itself, multifarious Chinese neologisms are springing up like bamboo shoots, whose large scale and quantity as well as fast changes are unprecedented in the development of Chinese vocabulary.Chinese political neologisms,in particular,as the latest demonstration of every field in our social development, like politics, economy, ideology and culture, lays the foundation of Chinese neologisms.Through these political neologisms, people can have a comprehensive knowledge of our present national conditions as well as a better understanding of current social development situation. Therefore, correct and accurate translation of these political neologisms plays a decisive role in our publicity work;also it is of crucial significance to establish China's political image and promote international communication and cooperation.Admittedly, some scholars have already carried out studies on political neologisms, which exert guiding significance on the translation of these neologisms. However, there still exist some problems, the most prominent of which is that these political neologisms are too new to find precedents to go by.We can't get accurate answers by referring to ordinary dictionaries since these dictionaries only have the basic interpretations.Due to the fact that these simple definitions can't be used directly in the translation process, translators must get down to the creative translation work and try to be the first person to translate a certain political neologism. What's more, endowed with distinctive Chinese cultural characteristics as well as particular political overtones, these political neologisms can cause many more difficulties for the translation.Given this, starting from many living examples this thesis collects materials related to political neologisms during the recent five years and analyzes existing problems during the translation process of political neologisms.Thencombining Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory with cases in practical translation, the thesis puts forward two principles for the translation of political neologisms, that is,being meaning-oriented and receptor-oriented.At the same time, the writer in this thesis proposes six translation strategies: literal translation, literal translation plus annotation, amplification, liberal translation, back translation and transliteration. All in all, this thesis aims to propose some reference strategies with the hope of shedding some light on the translation study of Chinese political neologisms.
