The Reward Of Ming Government To Yong Shun Chieftain

The chieftain system is the administrative management system which was mainly implemented in southwest minority areas during the Yuan,Ming and Qing Dynasty,and the Yongshun chieftain is one of the big chieftains in the Huguang area.The form of the Yongshun chieftain has changed in the Ming Dynasty,which was called the Yongshun appeasement agency in the Yuan Dynasty,and was named as the Yongshun conciliation agency during the Ming and Qing Dynasty,among them,the Ming Dynasty is the period when the Yongshun chieftain is the most prosperous,with jurisdiction of “three states and six places”,which is roughly the same with Guzhang,Longshan and Yongshun in the Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture of Hunan Province.The academic research of the chieftain system in Yongshun mainly focuses on the evolution of the chieftain system,the political system,the military system,the transformation of the soil,and so on,but the attention on one of the important contents of the chieftain system—the commendation system is not enough.From the records on the official history,chorography and the genealogies of the chieftain and other folk literatures,we can learn that the Yongshun chieftain had continuously received the requisition and tributary of the Ming Dynasty,and was repeatedly rewarded by the government.Therefore,this paper takes Yongshun as an example,on the basis of the official and private data to do the research on commendation system of the Ming Dynasty,aimed at researching on the chieftain channel,content and effect in the Yongshun chieftain,so as to explore the interactive relation between the Yongshun chieftain and the central dynasty.The whole paper is divided into six parts.The “introduction” mainly discusses about the origin of the topic,the significance of the research,the elated research results on the Yongshun chieftain and the commendation by the academic community.The first chapter is entitled as “the Yongshun Chieftain in the Ming Dynasty ",with the historical basis of the literature records,from the aspects,such as the cultural environment,the establishment and development of Yongshun chieftain in Ming Dynasty,and the political,economic and cultural management of the chieftain Yongshun by the government in the Ming Dynasty to illustrate the organization of the Yongshun chieftain,the historical evolution of the jurisdiction and the historical process for governance o fthe Yongshun chieftain by the government in the Ming Dynasty.The second chapter is titled as "the commendation system of chieftain in the Ming Dynasty ",based on the <History of the Ming Dynasty> and the <Code of Great Ming Dynasty >,starting from the military tribute,to outline the development and evolution process of the commendation system of chieftain in the Ming Dynasty.The third chapter is titled as "the content of the rewards to the Yongshun chieftain in the Ming Dynasty ",first of all,we take the Yongshun chieftain battle as the example to research about the military and the tributary channels of the Yongshun chieftain;secondly,we analyze the changes and causes of the content of the rewards to the Yongshun chieftain from the aspects of the material reward,rank awards,and the temporal change.The fourth chapter is entitled as “the influence of the rewards to the Yongshun chieftain in the Ming Dynasty”,and analyzes the influence of the influence of the rewards to the Yongshun chieftain by the government from three aspects.Its influence is firstly reflected in the aspect that the reward encouraged the Yongshun chieftain to fight and at the same time to consolidate the rule of the Ming Dynasty,despite the pacification of places.The second is that it is helpful to arouse the enthusiasm of Yongshun chieftain to obey the requisition and tribute,to make the Yongshun chieftain show the awareness in action when the Ming Dynasty is faced with crisis and has some requirements.The third is with the increasing of the awards,the strength and reputation of the chieftain are promoting,so that its relationship with the surrounding chieftain will be changed thus maintain the stability of the chieftain.
