This thesis takes Lin Yutang's translation of Six Chapters of a Floating Life as study object, analyzes the translation shifts on the semantic, syntactic, pragmatic and stylistic level from the perspective of Van Leuven Zwart' translation shift theory, and explores the effects and underlying reasons. The thesis holds that Lin combines foreignization and domestication with the purpose of introducing Chinese classic culture to westerners, and he sticks to three principles of translation: fidelity, smoothness and beauty. In addition,Lin integrates explicitation and sentence-based translation with his translation criteria. The translation shifts existing in Lin's translation are out of his translation strategies.Meanwhile, the translation shifts make his translation convey the spirit as well as the literal meaning of the source text, and conform to the target readers' reception standard. This accords with Lin's translation criteria, and contributes to the realization of Lin's translation purpose. This thesis analyzes a classical essay of the Qing dynasty,Six Chapters of a Floating Life, from Zwart's translation shift theory, aiming at the promotion and expansion of the research and research perspectives of Lin's translation of Six Chapters of a Floating Life and the essays of the Ming and Qing dynasties.
