On Rowling's Creation Of The Harry Potter Series Under Power Manipulation

There are many thought-provoking conflicted narrations in the Harry Potter fantasy series.Is the creation of Harry Potter series free expression of the author's artistic thinking,or cultural production under power manipulations?This thesis applies Bourdieu's theories about symbolic power and literary field,and intends to study power manipulation on Rowling's creation of Harry Potter series,in three aspects including manipulation of symbolic power,manipulation of power brought by the pursuit for economic capital and manipulation of power brought by the pursuit for cultural capital.The position of Harry Potter series in literary field places them under manipulation of economic capital and cultural capital.These manipulations would both provoke the author's authority to make subversive narrations,and urge the author to fulfill the readers' expectation to earn economic profits.Besides,the attributes of symbolic power would guide the creation of literary production:in order to convey the themes of the fictions,Rowling must construct a binary pair of rivaling parties in the storyline,including the party which acquired symbolic power and the party which didn't acquire.The result of this guidance happens to be conflicted with the themes that the fictions convey.The research significance of this thesis lies in the perspective it provides to view the creation of Harry Potter series as unification of "free expression of the author's artistic thinking" and "cultural production under power manipulations",by considering both author and literary production as objects under manipulations in literary field.
