On E-C Translation Of Film Dialogues In Subtitle:Pluralism And Option

The rapid development of film industry,especially the introduction of splendid western films,offers audience a broader access to western culture.As a result,the E-C translation of film dialogues in subtitle attracts more attention,but the option standard of the translation strategies and methods still varies from translator to translator.Guided by context theory,adopting both literature research method and case study method,this thesis analyzes the specific cases of E-C translation of dialogues in subtitle of the Big Bang Theory,trying to find out the option standard of translation strategies and methods for E-C translation of dialogues in subtitle.Taking popular films as examples,this thesis finds that the translation strategies and methods diversify in the E-C translation of dialogues in subtitle.Then through a literature review on previous studies of E-C translation of dialogues in subtitle,the author is still confronted with the problem of option from multilateral translation strategies and methods advocated by different scholars,that is,how to choose the proper translation strategy and method for a particular dialogue in the subtitle? To solve this problem,the author introduces the context theory,because a text,especially a discourse in this research,is usually embedded in a certain context,including linguistic,immediate and cultural context.When transferred into another language,the linguistic,immediate and cultural context may be different from those of the original text.So,the appropriateness of the standard of choosing a translation strategy or method for E-C translation of film dialogues in subtitle should be its appropriateness in the new Chinese context.No matter how many translation strategies or methods there are,there must be one which is most appropriate to the new context.To illustrate the effectiveness of such a standard selection,the author employs some samples from The Big Bang Theory.By analyzing the textual appropriateness to the original context in the English version and the textual inappropriateness or appropriateness to the Chinese context in the Chinese version,the author finds that successful translation samples result from their Chinese contextual appropriateness-oriented translation strategy and method selection while unsuccessful translation samples result from their translation strategy and method selection inappropriate to the new Chinese context.Besides the analysis,the author,guided by the contextual theory,attempts to re-translate those unsuccessful translation samples.
