| Impoliteness,the opposite of politeness,is studied much less than politeness.However,different impoliteness theories have been put forward so far,one of which is Bousfield's impoliteness model.Bousfield's impoliteness model is relatively influential and is of high maneuverability and feasibility.Up to present,many scholars have applied Bousfield's impoliteness model into drama,court and Talk Shows discourses;but few studies of impoliteness apply Bousfield's impoliteness model into the field of fictional discourse.Therefore,this thesis tried to analyze the fictional dialogues of The Joy Luck Club with Bousield's impoliteness model from the three aspects as follows:(1)to check the practicality of Bousfield's impoliteness model in Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club;(2)to explore whether impoliteness can influence the construction of characters' images;(3)to analyze how the impoliteness reveals the conflicts and relationships among the characters.Through choosing the dialogues with impoliteness in The Joy Luck Club,this thesis analyzed the chosen dialogues by using qualitative and quantitative analysis.Through the present study,three conclusions come as follows:(1)the thesis has verified that Bousfield's impoliteness model is feasible in the field of fictional dialogues;(2)impoliteness does not only help construct negative images,but positive image of the characters;(3)the impoliteness strategies used by the characters can reveal the different conflicts and contradictions among them,which are the conflicts of family value and concepts of value,contradictions of values on marriage and different language expression.Therefore,the thesis makes some meaningful researches for the development of impoliteness.Theoretically,the present study provides a new angle on the study of fiction and broadens the material of impoliteness study.Practically,the thesis helps readers have a better and comprehensive understanding of impoliteness and The Joy Luck Club. |
